Description
Santa Fe Capitulations and Decree of Expulsion of the Jews (Collection)

This collection brings together three historical documents that bear witness to three far-reaching events of 1492 in Spanish history: the Treaty of Granada, the so-called Alhambra Decree and the Santa Fe Capitulations. The former outlines the terms of the capitulation of the Nasrid rule in Granada, which had been besieged for months by troops of the Catholic Monarchs Isabella I and Ferdinand V in the context of the Reconquista. The fortress marked the fall of the last Muslim ruling dynasty on the Iberian Peninsula. The chancery copy of the treaty was probably made for Diego López de Pacheco, Marquis of Villena and Duke of Escalona, who took part in the siege as a general, and features a large royal coat of arms. With the Alhambra Decree, the expulsion of Jewish people who had not converted to Christianity by force was enshrined for centuries, thus permanently marginalizing a large population group that had lived in the multi-ethnic region since ancient times. For a long time, the Jewish faith could only be practiced in secret, unless those affected fled to North Africa, the Levant, Greece and Central Europe. The Capitulations of Santa Fe finally set out the conditions under which Christopher Columbus embarked on his expedition towards the West. The document guarantees him, for example, the title of admiral for all sea and land territories he “discovered” or conquered.
