Baptism of Jesus

The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest in the world and has its own unique artistic tradition, e.g. this literal depiction from the life of Jesus: “It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, ‘You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’.” (Mark 1:9-11)

The Golden Bull

Golden Bull – Christ the King

This gorgeous Gothic manuscript containing the laws of the Holy Roman Empire begins with the rules concerning the election of the emperor. The text is partly composed in glimmering gold ink, and gold features prominently on the rest of the page. The exemplary initial on the left accompanies a miniature of Christ, flanked by two angels, enthroned as a king with an orb in one hand and making the sign of the benediction with the other.

The floral border is truly impressive, it is a menagerie of birds, foxes, dogs, and apes in a forest of red, blue, and green tendrils. A helmet with a splendid plume and crown appears at the top of the page, and human figures in the marginalia range from a soldier armed with spear and shield to bathing blonde maidens.
