Rotulus, Scroll

(From Lat. rota = wheel, scroll, roller) the scroll was the ancient form of the book until it was replaced in the course of Late Antiquity by the cf. Codex. In the Middle Ages, papyrus scrolls were replaced by parchment scrolls (Rotulus), which could be up to 6m long and were still used for directories and administrative purposes .
