Writing room of medieval monasteries where the great majority of illuminated manuscripts originated. Only in Italy have there always been scribes who did not belong to a monastery but did their work in ateliers for a fee. Only with the flourishing of cities and chanceries can professional scribes be found in the rest of Europe.
